Washburn

Year Founded:

The Washburn brand was founded in 1883 according to some Washburn head stamps and logos. The brand was formed by the Lyon & Healy Company in Chicago Illinois.

The Lyon & Healy Company which started as a sheet music retailer launched many brands covering guitars, mandolins,  banjos, zithers, harps, percussion instruments, reed organs, pipe organs, pianos and brass instruments.

In 1928 the Washburn name along with some other assests of Lyon & Healy were purchased by the Tonk Bros. company. Tonks Bros. continued to use the Washburn brand name for guitars until about the end of World War II when the Washburn brand name was dropped.

In 1974 the Washburn trademark was purchased by Beckman Musical who sold the trademark to Fretted Industries. Fretted Industries was a music instrument importer based in Northbrook Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, owned by Rudy Schlacher and Rick Johnstone.

In 1978 the Wing Series was the first reemergence of the Washburn name, imported from Japan.

In 1987 Fretted Industries company name changed to Washburn International.

In 2003 Washburn International Inc. name changed to U.S. Music Corp.

In 2009 U.S. Music Corp was aquired by Jam Industries.
